by 2 months, most babies are starting to smile socially and show more interest in the world. they are gaining head control and beginning to coo.

milestones at 2 months

physical

3 milestones
  • holds head up more steadily during tummy time
  • pushes up slightly when on tummy
  • movements become smoother and less jerky

cognitive

3 milestones
  • follows objects with eyes past the midline
  • pays attention to faces
  • begins to act bored if activity doesn't change (cries or fusses)

social & emotional

3 milestones
  • smiles at people (first social smile)
  • can briefly calm themselves (may suck on hands)
  • looks at parent when they talk

language

2 milestones
  • coos and makes gurgling sounds
  • turns head toward sounds

when to talk to your GP

every child develops at their own pace, but speak to your GP or child health nurse if your child at 2 months:

  • no social smile by 8 weeks
  • doesn't follow moving objects with eyes
  • doesn't bring hands to mouth
  • cannot hold head up when pushed up on tummy

what parents can do

  • smile and make faces at your baby — they learn by imitating
  • talk to your baby during nappy changes and feeds
  • increase tummy time gradually as they get stronger
  • this is when the first immunisations are due — check your schedule
