Australian kids product recalls

by milly chen

how to check if a kids product is recalled, what the mandatory standards cover, and what to do if you own a recalled product.

check the live ACCC database before buying second-hand

the ACCC publishes every Australian product recall at productsafety.gov.au — including all baby and toddler product categories. recall notices remain live indefinitely because second-hand items continue to circulate for years.

how to check if your product is recalled

  1. 1. go to productsafety.gov.au/recalls
  2. 2. filter by "baby and toddler products" or search the product name / brand
  3. 3. check the model number on your product against the recall notice — recalls are often specific to one batch or model
  4. 4. follow the remedy offered by the supplier — usually a refund, replacement or repair
  5. 5. subscribe to ACCC recall alerts at the same page so you're notified of future recalls

mandatory safety standards for kids products

these categories have mandatory standards in Australia — a product cannot be sold unless it complies. when a standard is tightened or a batch is found non-compliant, a recall is issued.

prams and strollers

AS/NZS 2088:2013

common recall reasons:

  • brake failure or missing red brake control
  • harness failure
  • tipping or structural collapse
  • missing warning labels

cots and portable cots

AS/NZS 2172 (cots), AS/NZS 2195 (portable cots)

common recall reasons:

  • entrapment gaps greater than 4 cm between mattress and cot sides
  • undersized mattresses
  • spacing between slats that can trap a baby's head
  • failing side-rail latches

car seats and child restraints

AS/NZS 1754

common recall reasons:

  • harness buckle failure
  • misleading age/weight labels
  • incorrect installation instructions
  • non-compliant accessories (seat protectors, head supports)

toys and small parts

Mandatory toy standard (for children up to 36 months)

common recall reasons:

  • small parts that separate and can choke a child
  • magnets that can be swallowed and cause internal injury
  • button batteries in reachable locations
  • lead or unsafe levels of chemicals in paint or plastic

dummies and dummy chains

Mandatory standard for baby dummies and dummy chains

common recall reasons:

  • dummy chains that are too long
  • parts that detach
  • non-compliant labelling

children's nightwear

AS/NZS 1249

common recall reasons:

  • fire-hazard categorisation labelling missing or incorrect
  • fabric that burns faster than the standard allows

baby carriers and slings

voluntary standard AS/NZS ISO 13201 / ASTM F2236 followed by many brands

common recall reasons:

  • buckle failure
  • stitching failure under load
  • inadequate head support for newborns

infant formula

TGA + FSANZ regulations

common recall reasons:

  • contamination (bacterial, chemical)
  • labelling errors around age suitability
  • foreign objects in batches

what to do if your product is recalled

  • stop using it immediately — even if nothing has gone wrong yet
  • read the recall notice — the ACCC listing tells you what remedy the supplier is offering
  • contact the supplier — they cover the refund, replacement or repair cost, not you
  • if the product caused injury — report to ACCC (productsafety.gov.au) and seek medical attention
  • can't reach the supplier? — contact your state fair trading or consumer affairs office
