about the data
each Australian state and territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages publishes a top baby names list for the previous calendar year. the lists are based on names registered — so a child born in December 2024 but registered in January 2025 counts to the 2025 list.
NSW and VIC together account for roughly 55% of Australian births. the Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes total births data but not names — the names data only exists at state BDM level.
Queensland had not released 2025 data as of April 2026. WA and NT publish less frequently. ACT data is released by Access Canberra.
