cry it out (extinction)

by priya chatterjee
extinctionCIOfull extinction

the parent puts the baby down awake and does not return until morning (or the next scheduled feed). the baby learns to self-settle without any parental intervention during the night.

best age

6 months onwards (some paediatricians recommend waiting until 6 months)

time to work

3-5 nights typically

crying level

high

how it works — step by step

  1. 1.complete your bedtime routine — feed, bath, book, cuddle.
  2. 2.put your baby in the cot awake but drowsy, say goodnight, and leave the room.
  3. 3.do not return for checks or comfort until the next morning (or a scheduled overnight feed).
  4. 4.the baby will likely cry — sometimes intensely — for the first few nights.
  5. 5.by night 3-5, most babies cry significantly less or not at all.

pros

  • +fastest method — most babies self-settle within 3-5 nights.
  • +clear and simple for parents to follow.
  • +strong research base showing effectiveness.

cons

  • -emotionally very difficult for parents — hearing prolonged crying is stressful.
  • -not suitable for babies under 6 months.
  • -can feel harsh — some parents find it incompatible with their parenting style.
  • -may not suit babies with reflux, medical issues, or high anxiety.

what the research says

a landmark 2016 study in Pediatrics (Gradisar et al.) found that extinction produced faster sleep improvements than graduated extinction, with no differences in cortisol levels, emotional/behavioural problems, or parent-child attachment at 12 months. the Australian research community generally considers it safe when used from 6 months.
