pick up, put down

by priya chatterjee
PUPDpick up put down method

when the baby cries, the parent picks them up to calm them, then puts them back down once calm. this is repeated as many times as needed until the baby falls asleep in the cot.

best age

4-8 months (can overstimulate older babies)

time to work

1-2 weeks typically

crying level

moderate

how it works — step by step

  1. 1.complete your bedtime routine and put baby down awake.
  2. 2.if baby cries, pick them up and comfort them until they stop crying.
  3. 3.as soon as they are calm (not asleep), put them back in the cot.
  4. 4.if they cry again, pick up and repeat.
  5. 5.this may need to be repeated many times (sometimes 50+ times in early nights).
  6. 6.over days, the number of pick-ups decreases as baby learns to settle.

pros

  • +baby is never left to cry alone — reassuring for attachment-focused parents.
  • +responsive — you are actively comforting your child.
  • +no set intervals or timers to follow.

cons

  • -physically exhausting — dozens of pick-ups per night in the early days.
  • -can overstimulate older babies (8+ months) who get frustrated with the repetition.
  • -less structured, which some parents find harder to stick with.
  • -slower results than extinction or ferber.

what the research says

pick up, put down is popular with attachment-style parenting advocates. while there is limited dedicated research, the approach aligns with responsive parenting principles. some sleep researchers note it can inadvertently reinforce crying in some babies.
